Florida Mom Honored as Hero After Family Suffers in Domestic Violence Incident

A domestic violence tragedy has drawn attention in the United States, with the killing of a Florida mother protecting her kids in the middle of domestic violence. Jason Kenney, aged 47, has been accused of shooting and killing his wife, Crystal Roure, aged 38, after the argument between the two escalated late at night while the perpetrator was intoxicated and watching Monday Night Football, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. This tragedy struck the family just three days before the celebration of Christmas.

During this altercation, Roure reportedly asked her 12 year old son to go to a neighbor’s house and call 911. As this child fled, he reportedly heard a gunshot. The deputies found Roure dead in her living room. The couple’s 13 year old daughter had been shot in her bed, yet she survived. The couple had a one year old child who was safe. Authorities report that after fleeing the scene, Kenney died due to a self inflicted gunshot wound after informing his sister he would not go to jail.

I selected this case for discussion due to the tragic outcome and the extent to which domestic violence can lead, especially considering the fact that the violence occurred within the four walls of the family home without any previous reported incidents to the police. Even though the family reported a previous history of domestic violence, the police did not have any previous reported incidents regarding the family. This further emphasizes the difficulty experienced in trying to prevent domestic violence.

Moreover, further research reveals that alcohol abuse often leads to cases of domestic violence, which increases the chances of serious injury or death. Legal protective orders, intervention, and community awareness are also highlighted in this case. Crystal Roure, however, is being hailed as a hero after she prioritized her kids in her last moments, saving their lives.
